ART+FEMINISM theground

what: Art+Feminism is an international org. committed to closing information gaps related to gender, feminism, and the arts, beginning with Wikipedia. in 2024, Dr. Machado & Athena Vinson established a chapter of this org. called theground. in simple terms, we find folks on a list provided by ART+FEM that either are missing Wikipedia pages or whose pages are insufficient. we then edit those pages together on site or remotely. ART+FEM and Wikipedia then track our work.

why: representation/visibility recognizes existence, which invites others to similarly exist, and then create, build and maintain community. independent, community-based media is under threat from entities who aspire to limit and control access to information. feminism?—> feminism historically can mean different things. for us, feminism = the understanding that dominant culture and society generally are organized consistent with white, masculine, middle- or upper-class, Euro-American, not yet-yet-disabled, heterosexual norms. feminism works to help make this system visible and then change it to allow for other norms. [the core of this definition comes from Robyn Warhol, Narrative Theory: Core Concepts and Critical Debates, 2012]

when: off-site: always. on-site: as of 2024, most often weekly (site may vary).

who: us, you, likeminds.

how: to be part of our group, here’s the link: theground , which will prompt you to log-in/create an account with Wiki & accept site terms (OAuth).

to edit: here’s a little how-to video made by Athena Vinson (chapter co-founder) . likely best to watch this first.

next: pick someone or an entity from this Excel workbook list // note the tabs on the bottom of the Excel workbook that provide categories. click into those categories based on your interests. check out the people in these categories by clicking on their names, which will take you to their Wiki pages// select (2) or (3) people who might want to work on.

email us lvchumanities ( a t ) lvc.edu the Wikipedia URLs for these people/entities. they will then will be assigned to our group.

to start: if you are working on a Wiki page for a person, see where that person went to school // look up that school in Wiki // find the section of the page called Notable Alumni // if one exists (one usually does), assign that Wiki page to yourself at the dashboard for theground // then go back and edit that Wiki page Notable Alumni section to include the person on whom you are working. **note: it’s important that you assign yourself a given Wiki page within the dashboard of theground before you edit it so that our group progress can be recognized as part of Art + Feminism.
